The Ivy League Calls Harrison's Name

October 8, 2006

Vol.1 Article 37

Harrison Gaines, the 6 foot point guard from Serrano High School has selected the University of Pennsylvania as his home for the next four years.  Ranked by scout.com as one of the best point guards on the west coast, Harrison is a 2-year All-CIF performer and Serrano's all-time leading scorer in only 3 years of varsity competition.  Harrison was also voted Hi-Desert Player of the Year in both his sophomore and junior years.  Starting every game since his freshmen year, he lead his team to the CIF playoffs with an average of 20 points, 8 assists and 2 steals.

Harrison took an official visit last weekend to the University of Pennsylvania in West Philadelphia where he had a great experience.  After spending time with the players, playing with them in open gym, visiting classrooms, meeting professors and administrators as well as visiting areas around Philadelphia -- Harrison left Philadelphia very impressed.

Penn’s Head Coach Glen Miller and Assistant Coach Mike Martin have tracked Harrison since the April evaluation period this spring. Harrison competed in the adidas Superstar camp in Georgia for the second consecutive year where he played well.  The coaches continued to follow Harrison from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and finally to the last tournament of the summer -- adidas Best of the Summer.

Having achieved a 3.6 grade point average, Harrison was enticed by the opportunity to obtain an Ivy League education. In addition, the University of Pennsylvania participates in the Philadelphia City Rivalry Series where they have annual games with Villanova, Temple, St. Joseph’s, and LaSalle.  This series is huge in Philadelphia and the atmosphere at the Big 5 games is incredible.  Harrison is looking forward to experiencing the Series for himself.

Some of the other deciding factors for his decision were the fact that the Quakers have won the Ivy League 4 of the past 5 years; Penn goes to the NCAA Tournament on a regular basis; and Penn has an up-tempo style offense, which will allows him to play his game.  Lastly Harrison felt very confident after playing with Penn’s players and ”giving them the business”.  Penn considers Harrison their number one recruit and he believes he will be allowed to play significant minutes as a freshman.

With all these factors in mind, Harrison returned home, had discussions with his parents and decided that the University of Pennsylvania is the place for him.

Harrison credits IEBP with providing him with the exposure and helping to develop his game with personal workouts over the last three years.  Harrison has been one of the hardest working, most committed players that IEBP has witnessed.  This summer Harrison gave his all as he competed in the adidas Superstar Camp, four tournaments in July, the Baron Davis Camp and the 5 Star Camp in New Jersey this August.

The entire IEBP Family celebrates with Harrison Gaines as he prepares for an exciting college basketball career.
